The excitement of this year’s
spring play, ‘The Adventures of Doctor Dolittle’ is tempered with a note of
sadness as we remember our dear friend and gifted choreographer, Dorothy
Hallman who passed away after a long illness in August of 2004. The company
dedicates this production to her loving memory.
Dorothy’s passion for her
craft was evident throughout last year’s rehearsals for ‘Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory’ as she worked tirelessly with the children on their dance
routines. A true perfectionist, Dorothy could be seen many times onstage
herself demonstrating complicated dance moves. Unfortunately, her illness
prevented her from attending the actual performances, but Dorothy’s
abounding energy infused our production with life.
A professional choreographer and dancer
herself, Dorothy’s talents were utilized by many schools and community
theater groups throughout Westchester, Duchess and Putnam. Some of these
include ‘Anything Goes’, ‘Once Upon a Mattress’, ‘Annie Get Your Gun’, ‘Bye
Bye Birdie’, ‘Snow White’ and ‘Peter Pan’. At the same time she was working
with PCDC last spring, Dorothy was also choreographing Pawling High School’s
production of ‘Fame.’
In 2003, Dorothy
choreographed 2 other shows with PCDC, ’Cinderella’ and “‘I Can’t Believe
They Put Me In Charge of the School Pageant’ Pageant.’” That summer, she
also taught Broadway Bound, a weeklong workshop for PCDC, which
incorporated many disciplines of theater including dance, song, and creative
improvisation.
A talented and versatile
actress, Dorothy appeared in numerous community theater productions
including ‘Taming of the Shrew’, ‘Our Town’, ‘The Odd Couple’, ‘Last of the
Red Hot Lovers’, ‘Play it Again, Sam’, and ‘Steel Magnolias’. Her last role
was The Fairy Godmother in Pawling Theater Company’s ‘Cinderella’ in the
fall of 2003.
Dorothy was also the director
of the Gifted and Talented Program for the Bedford School District. Her
family includes her husband Bob and her daughter Laura.
Dorothy’s tremendous talent
impacted so many children who have been involved in our theatrical
productions in the year that she was part of the PCDC family. We are
grateful that Dorothy shared her gift with us for that brief time and her
spirit will remain with us always. Because Dorothy was so invested in the
growth of theater and contributed so much of herself we feel that it is
fitting to honor her memory in a tangible way. To that end, we are setting
up a fund in her name specifically for the purpose of growing the theater
department of PCDC. Our hope is to enhance the look and feel of our
productions with improved sound, lighting and other capabilities.
. Your gift to The Dorothy
Hallman Discovery Players Fund will both honor her memory and help us
continue to offer quality productions infused with the same level of
professionalism that Dorothy gave to us. |
